The ukactive industry organization has invited Scottish Prime Minister Nicola Sturgeon to “visit gymnasiums and leisure facilities” to see first-hand the measures the facilities are putting in place to protect customers and staff from COVID-19.

The invitation was made after Sturgeon revealed that recreational facilities in Scotland would remain closed “until July” – because she thought they were “homes” for the spread of the coronavirus.

Speaking at his daily press conference, Sturgeon said: “There is new evidence that places like pubs, restaurants and gyms can be hot spots for transmission, so it’s very important that we understand better this evidence and what additional mitigation measures may be necessary to protect people in these spaces before allowing them to reopen. “

In response to comments, ukactive issued a statement, saying: “We are disappointed to hear Premier Nicola Sturgeon’s comments today when she mistakenly termed gymnasiums as hot spots for the transmission of COVID -19.

“We urge all leaders to make thoughtful statements about the cleanliness and safety of gymnasiums and recreation centers and to work with the sector and its representatives to support their reopening.

“Today, we invited Nicola Sturgeon, along with the other party leaders, to visit the gymnasiums and recreational facilities of our members, to see for themselves the measures in place to protect customers and staff. of COVID-19.

“Our recommended framework for reopening has been reviewed by medical experts and includes the increase in disinfection stations and processes such as regular wiping of equipment, as equipment is spaced, capacity reduced and more of time between lessons.

“Our industry is an open book and has already invited government and UK Public Health officials to sites to reassure them that gymnasiums can safely implement social distancing.

No workforce is more passionate about the health and well-being of our citizens, so our members take proactive steps to ensure the highest possible standards of hygiene. “
