BIRMINGHAM, Alabama (June 17, 2020) – The Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) has joined the consortium of male basketball referees formed by the Southeastern Conference, the American Athletic Conference, ASUN, the Southern and Sun Belt Conferences, it was announced Tuesday.
The Southeastern Conference also announced that Reggie Cofer, an NCAA veteran with Final Four experience and currently coordinator of SWAC officials, will join the SEC as an assistant coordinator for men’s basketball officials. In his new role, he will work closely with the SEC Men’s Basketball Officials Coordinator Mike Eades and the SEC Men’s Basketball Assistant Commissioner Dan Leibovitz.
“We are pleased to enhance our basketball referee program by hosting the Southwestern Athletic Conference in our consortium of umpires and to have a veteran official and coordinator like Reggie Cofer on our staff,” said the commissioner. from the SEC, Greg Sankey. “I appreciate the help of the SWAC commissioner, Dr. Charles McClelland, to develop this relationship and we look forward to working with the consortium conferences to continue improving our basketball refereeing program.”
The referee consortium was created to enable conferences to collaborate on all arbitration issues related to the recruitment, education and training, programming and evaluation of officials in the sport of men’s basketball .

Cofer, who has been the SWAC Officials Coordinator since 2009, was a Division I official from 1991 to 2005, working in conferences in the Southeast, the Atlantic coast, the far south, the colonies and the south. He was selected to work in the NCAA tournament from 1999 to 2005, including two appearances for Sweet 16 and the 2003 NCAA National Championship game. He was also a regional adviser to NCAA officials and an observer to SEC officials.
